Writing Tips: 5 Ways to Overcome Writer's Block

Writing Tips: 5 Ways to Overcome Writer's Block

Every author, no matter how experienced, faces the dreaded blank page. Writer's block is not a sign of failure; it's a natural part of the creative process. Here are five strategies to help you push through the resistance.

    1. Lower Your Expectations for the First Draft

The goal of a first draft is simply to exist. Give yourself permission to write terribly. You can edit a bad page, but you cannot edit a blank one.

    2. Change Your Environment

If you usually write at a desk, try moving to a coffee shop, a library, or even just a different room in your house. A change in scenery can often trigger a shift in perspective.

    3. Write Out of Order

If you're stuck on chapter three, jump to chapter seven. Write the scenes you are most excited about first. You can always connect the dots later.

    4. Set Micro-Goals

Instead of aiming for 2,000 words a day, aim for 200. Or commit to writing for just 15 minutes. Once you start, momentum often takes over.

    5. Step Away and Experience Life

Sometimes, the well is simply dry. Go for a walk, read a book, have a conversation with a friend. Creativity requires input as much as output.
